RECORDING Checklist
Microphone - An external mic is preferred. In order to prevent audio leakage to the mic, please keep your earphone volume turned down to a low but comfortable setting
Wear headphones - This way the sound of us chatting won’t be picked up by your mic.
Please ensure you are on a strong and dedicated internet connection. A hardwire (CAT-6 ethernet cable) connection is ideal.
Double check the time zones - I am in Las Vegas (please reserve judgment) and we are PST
Find a quiet place to record - That said, unannounced toddlers and/or pets are happily tolerated (and can be edited out accordingly)
Interviews typically last about 60-90 minutes but can go over by a few minutes if the conversation is fun and enriching for both of us. Please schedule accordingly to ensure buffer time for warm-ups or tech issues.
In summary, all you’ll need are headphones and a microphone. There are no additional software requirements or anything special to do. That said, if you are technically comfortable with recording our conversation simultaneously on your end with Garage Band or a similar recording platform, by all means! Using your locally recorded audio file in the final edit will always sound superior. To that point, don’t worry about flubs, ums and ahs in your responses. We professionally edit the podcasts afterward so everyone sounds as smooth and coherent as an NPR year-end special.
